There were two brothers, and the village knew them in those days as 'the Commander' and 'the Colonel'. The Colonel had a wife, Mabel Champion de Crespigny, and it was her brother Commander Stagg who came to stay and spent most of his time researching the village history. Colonel de Crespigny was a close shooting friend of Ronald Deterding of Kelling Hall, and the writing on this photo, "Your Companion in Arms", refers to Ronald Deterding.
